TriTech? Overhaul Kits Competitive Analysis

Every Overhaul. Lasting Value.

To the naked eye, most overhaul kits look pretty similar. The pistons have the same shape and the same number of rings, gaskets appear to be made of the same material, the only obvious difference is the price. So what makes a Genuine Cummins TriTech® Overhaul Kit worth more than the "will-fit" competition? Extensive testing and stress analysis show significant differences in design and manufacturing. Close examination proves that Cummins TriTech Overhaul Kit parts will last longer and perform better - making them the best value for your next overhaul.

Every Piston. Stronger.

Ever see a cracked piston? It usually starts around the pin bore, where the constant up-and-down motion adds stress to the area around the hole. Cummins pistons are made with a higher silicon content and less porosity than competitive pistons, so they have up to 17% greater resistance to the forces that cause piston cracking and premature failure.

Every Ring. Machined.

Under the microscope, it's easy to see the difference between Cummins TriTech rings and those of the competition. The outer surface of our top ring is machined for superior control of blowby gases. Our second ring is chrome-coated for longer life. Our oil control ring has a variable pitch spring that adjusts for wear, while other manufacturers cut corners and use a constant pitch spring, which can lead to excess oil consumption.

Every Liner. Crosshatched.

Using a microscope, you can see a very fine crosshatch pattern ground into the inside surface of every Cummins TriTech cylinder liner. These lines form a diamond pattern where the oil gathers and stays, providing a more even layer of protection between the piston rings and the liner. Competitive liners don't have any kind of cross-hatching. This extra step in the machining of Cummins TriTech cylinder liners improves lubrication and reduces wear on the rings.

Every Bearing. Cast.

Without getting deeply into the world of metallurgy, there are two different ways to make a bearing. You can cast them in a single piece using molten metal and a form, or you can use powdered metal as our competitors do, and "sinter" them into the desired shape. Obviously, when you're talking about a part that bears the full load of the engine as it is transferred to the crankshaft, stronger is better. Cummins TriTech bearings are cast, which gives them improved wear resistance and as much as 15% more fatigue strength when compared to sintered bearings. What happens when a sintered bearing breaks apart? Very often, you have to replace the entire block, which can cost thousands of dollars.

Every Head Gasket. Tougher.

There's even a difference in head gaskets, although you might not know it until your engine reaches about 200ºC. That's where competitive gaskets start to fail, which can lead to coolant leaks outside - or inside - your engine. The grommets in the head gaskets in Cummins TriTech Overhaul Kits are designed to withstand temperatures of at least 240ºC to prevent coolant leaks, unlike the silicone grommets of the competition. Additionally, Genuine Cummins cylinder head gaskets are made of aluminized steel, which is more durable than painted or moly-coated "will-fit" gaskets. Finally, Genuine Cummins head gaskets include a rubber edge molding around the outside of the gasket, providing an added layer of protection against outside elements such as road salt which can cause corrosion of the cylinder head and block mating surfaces.

Every Oil Pan Gasket. Thicker. Stronger.

There are both visible and invisible differences in the oil pan gaskets that directly correlate to performance. The Genuine Cummins oil pan gasket is made of MP15 material, providing superior bolt torque retention and low clamping force sealing compared to "will-fit" gaskets made of TS9016 or TS9003. Further, the Cummins oil pan gasket is 60% thicker than the non-genuine gaskets, providing additional protection.

Every Start-Up. Smooth.

Cummins TriTech Overhaul Kits include a finer phosphate coating on the liners, which helps improve the seating of the rings and reduces the potential for damage upon initial start-up. Competitive overhaul kits use a coarser grade of phosphate, which is similar to using a heavy grit of sandpaper.

Every TriTech Overhaul Kit. Guaranteed.

Of course, the biggest difference is the company that stands behind its product. Every Cummins TriTech Overhaul Kit is fully warranted for materials and workmanship for up to 3 years/300,000 miles (482,804 km) on our Cummins TriTech® Plus dual Ni-Resist pistons. So you can look forward to many more years of dependable, durable service from your Cummins engine with complete confidence.
